Beginner Fiddle Programs

While PEI Fiddle Camp provides instruction for the most advanced players, we’re also pleased to be providing two programs designed for beginners! Our JumpStart and CrossingOver programs are both designed for aspiring fiddlers of all ages (children, teens and adults are welcome). The programs consist of five days of private and group lessons. We understand that everyone learns at different speeds, so we will tailor the program to the individual camper as best we can. Campers will have the opportunity to take lessons from several distinguished instructors.

JumpStart Program
This program is designed for those who have never picked up a fiddle. We will cover basic fiddle techniques, how to care for your fiddle, and how to tune it! You will learn to play a couple tunes and how to identify different types of tunes, and of course, how to tap your feet! We’ll bring your playing as far along as we can in your first week, but most importantly, we’ll expand your listening skills and your understanding of the music.

CrossingOver Program
This program is designed for people who have begun their music journey with classical violin but want to try traditional fiddling. Along with learning tunes, we’ll also show you how to identify different types of tunes like marches, strathspeys, jigs, reels, airs, clogs, and hornpipes. We’ll talk about how and why to tap your feet, explore how the music and dancing are one, and expose you to various forms of accompaniment. We’ll stretch your ears and show you how to get people moving to your music!

Other Classes & Activities
Beginner fiddlers may also take advantage of regular classes and specialty classes to complete their camp experience. Moving to the music, accompaniment appreciation, step dancing, and set dancing are all recommended. Our goal with the Beginner Programs is to set you up for a lifetime of music-making, and to have fun in the process. Don’t be shy…give it a try!
